THE COLOURS of CAPE TOWN... THE BO-KAAP

Bo Kaap, The Cape Malay Quarter.
We were there on a Sunday, in the 'heat' of the day, it was silent and awesome!
You can see how 'house-proud' these people are!
Known for its brightly coloured houses, Bo-Kaap is the spiritual home of the Cape’s Muslim community.
Hidden in central Cape Town, just beyond all the hustle and bustle of the town, we found this little treasure.
The Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most colourful suburbs.
What is Bo-Kaap?
It is a multicultural area, tucked safely into the fold of Signal Hill.
Bo-Kaap has a fascinating history.
Many of the residents are descendants of slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia and various African countries, who were imported to the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch during the 16th and 17th centuries.
The slaves were known as “Cape Malays” (which is not essentially true as most of the residents are not entirely of Malaysian descent). However the term has stuck and Bo-Kaap is also known today as the Cape Malay Quarter.
Have a lovely day and as always, THANX, M, (*_*)
