091 DE MOEREN…
DAY 6
De Moeren is a reclaimed land, it once was a swamp,as the name suggests, and was situated on the border between Belgium and France.
This is the St. Gustavus Mill (seen from the back) or what remains of it. A solid solid hull, top decorated with stone heads. The roof is covered with new shale, but the blades are no longer there.
De Moeren are between 3 to 4 meters below sea level and are therefore the lowest point of Belgium.
Since the 17th century, works, canals have been going on to reclaim this very fertile land, Once you would see 20 mills, to drain the water,
The original wooden mills were later replaced by stone mills that used an Archimedes screw to draw water up and feed it into the drainage channels.
The stone mills have now been replaced by modern pumping stations.
The light is extraordinary in De Moeren.
I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)
