064 THE HALLEN…
DAY 4
relaxing on a terrace in the shadow of the Belfry, on the market, we notice great activity in and out of the right ‘Hall’ paintings and sculptures being removed from the exhibitor that was held there. We walk over and ask if we can step inside to have a look? It is near empty, a few are still cleaning up, the lights are on! WOW.
I remember, how my grand-mother used to ‘drag’ me along on a Saturday morning when there was still market in these beautiful halls. She went to the ‘Butter-hall’, which was the hall on the other side, where farmers came with their dairy products. She loved Boereboter (farm butter) for everything, and always went the same woman, they would have their weekly chat and I would get bored…
Later, I remember dancing at a ball, the halls filled with music, dancing, laughter and beer, aaah…
More memories.
Medieval remains in the city include the old Market Halls (13th–15th century), to the sides and back of the Belfry-tower stands a rectangular building only 44 m broad but 84 m deep, with an inner courtyard.
The belfry, accordingly, is also known as the Halletoren (tower of the halls).
Now these awesome spaces only get used for the occasional exhibition.
We were lucky!!!
Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
