056 THE AUGUSTIJNENBRUG…
DAY 4
We continue as the canals change names after each bridge. I love the reflections on the green water.
This is a different bridge, the Augustijnenbrug. The name comes from the Augustinian monks who settled in the second half of the thirteenth century on the Augustijnenrei.
In 1294 given the Augustinians of the city's permission for their religious right to build a bridge over the rei. They must do this at their own expense.
The current bridge dates from 1391 and was built by the Bruges master mason Jan van Oudenaarde († 1412). In 1396 Jan van Oudenaarde was charged with providing two stages of the Augustine bridge. In 1937 the bridge partly re-maconed and strengthened.
In 1984 the bridge was again restored to the design of the Bruges Studiebureau Verschave.
The Augustine Bridge is a triple arched bridge. The facing stone built of regular cut stone blocks, probably Tournai limestone, bluestone using the keystones of the arches and the wrappers. The middle stone between the arches are reinforced with buttresses. At the height of the road surface, there is a profiled, bluestone water table on both sides of the parapet. On the west side bridge and two on the east side one brick flare. On the inner side of the ramparts are made stone benches. The road surface of the bridge is cobbled.
More of the other Brugge.
Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
