054 The LEGEND of the GOLDEN HAND…
DAY 4
The people of Brugge are know for their sense of detail, ornaments and humour. I noticed this above a door, and was curious why all the ‘Golden hand’ in that area?
So here is the legend!
Long ago, when the Gold-Handrei was still called St. Gillisreitje, the water of the Bruges canals was so pure that it was swarming with fish. Perch, bream, pike, carp, roach, white bream and eel. You only had a net or throw out a line and a few minutes later you already caught a fish.
But, and this was common knowledge, eel you better stay away from.
Eel has something of a snake. In addition, it only emerges at night. It has to be possessed by the devil.
There was an unwritten rule prohibiting fishing for eels.
Now there was a man, it is said that he came from Lissewege, who wasn’t worried about laws and traditions.
One evening he laid a trap in St. Gillisreitje. The next morning, his eyes sparkled with pleasure at the sight of so many delicious fish. Since his wife would make a nice meal of it. For a few days they would not have hungry stomachs.
But to his surprise he saw a beautiful, golden yellow eel amongst black ones.
Curious, he pulled the trap a little higher to lift the eel out of water. Until suddenly a strong, golden hand rose from the water. Who grabbed the man by his ankle and dragged him into the water.
Never has anyone heard from the poor guy, and since then they call the inhabitants of Lissewege rather mockingly "eel catchers."
It was as if the devil himself wanted to warn fishermen no more fishing for eels. Impossible, because since that day all eel disappeared from the canals and they never returned.
The bridge, since then is called the Golden-Hand Bridge over the Golden-Handrei.
More of the other Brugge.
Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
