053 VENICE of THE NORTH…
DAY 4
Canal after canal, bridge after bridge we walk…
This is the Gouden Hand Rei, ( Golden hand) and de Torenbrug, a lesser known place, out of the centre, where you meet less tourists!
‘Tower’ Bridge is a bridge across the Golden-Handrei and Augustijnenrei in Bruges .
The origin of the name is the Spanish family of merchants de la Torre.
A rich family of Spanish origin mentioned in connection with the bridge;
1331: the Brugghe Daer Jan van den Torre;
1340: an die vor Brughe John van den Thorre.
It is true that the name then covered the bridge that is now the Golden-Hand Bridge, particularly the bridge that allows passage over the water where the Golden-Handrei flows into the Langerei .
They named that bridge not the Torre Bridge, they just said the bridge next to the house of de la Torre…
Gold-Handrei is part of the first city walls and, together with the Smedenrei the Speelmansrei and Augustijnenrei dug in 1127-1128.
In 1270 the Golden-Handrei was, along with the other inner canals , deepened to make shipping possible.
More of the other Brugge.
Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
