029 A MONUMENTAL FIREPLACE…

DAY 3

The lady at reception in the Town Hall informed us that our tickets are also valid in Brugse Vrije, another building on the Burg. It has been years since I visited, Paul and my son never saw it, so…

Next to the old Court of Justice lies the renaissance hall called Brugse Vrije (Liberty of Bruges). Located in this former aldermen's chamber of the old Palace of the Brugse Vrije, is the monumental 16th-century Emperor-Charles-fireplace, made of oak wood, alabaster and marble, designed by Lanceloot Blondeel.

It is one of the most ostentatious pieces I have ever seen, goes up into the ceiling and the whole wall!

From this mansion, erected between 1722 and 1727, Bruges’ rural surroundings were governed.

The building functioned as a court of justice between 1795 and 1984.

Today the city archives are stored here.

They safeguard Bruges’ written memory.

I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)
