WINDOW TO THE SKY and THE JERUSALEM CHURCH
DAY 4 WINDOW TO THE SKY and THE JERUSALEM CHURCH
Next to the church, a gable with a window… to the sky?
For any visitor to Bruges, the Jerusalem Church is off the beaten track.
It is in an old working-class district, with low brick cottages surrounding a substantial complex of buildings that originally belonged to the wealthy Adornes family, who migrated here from Genoa in the thirteenth century.
The Jerusalem Church (Jeruzalemkerk) in Bruges is a unique chapel built in 1428 by a rich pilgrim, Anselm Adornes who had returned from Jerusalem.
There were many notable guests of the time, such as the King of Scotland, the Lords of Gruuthuse and the Dukes of Burgundy.
Modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, it includes a round tower, a macabre altar featuring skulls and ladders, and a replica of Christ's tomb.
The exterior of the chapel is dominated by an octagonal tower, which is topped with a Cross of Jerusalem, to commemorate the trip to Jerusalem and Mount Sinai that Anselm and his son undertook in 1470.
The two turrets are crowned, one with the sun, the other with the moon, somewhat echoing the two different towers of Chartres cathedral, which also represent the sun and the moon.
More of the other Brugge.
Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
