0143 TOWN HALL DAMME…

Tour of Europe 04 2016

Day 13

Many a photo further, we drive into Damme, sit on a terrace and have a last drink before we will have to say good-bye to Sonny.

The Town Hall Damme is an example of Brabant Gothic .

When Damme was still a port and the Zwin, before it silted up, the ground floor of the town hall was used as a goods warehouse. Governance, administration and justice happened upstairs.

In the tower a carillon is installed with 39 bells, including two from the 14th century .

Remarkable are also the town clock from 1459 and a sundial .

Against the facade of the town hall are six statues of the counts of Flanders ( Philip of Alsace , Johanna and Margarethe of Constantinople (who has in hand a model of the St. John's Hospital), Philip of Chieti and Charles the Bold , which to Margaret of York , his fiancee, offering the wedding ring (this marriage was indeed celebrated in Damme in 1468), these sculptures are by Gustavus Pickery .

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
