0114 THE GOTHIC HALL…
Tour of Europe 04 2016
Day 12
Having admired its exterior of the Town Hall, we enter the impressive Gothic Hall and gaze in awe at the polychrome floating ribs of the impressive double wooden vault ceiling.
Bruges' City Hall dates from 1376, was built in 55 years, and is one of the oldest in the Netherlands, a fine example, copied by many, like Brussels, Ghent, Leuven.
From here, the city has been governed for more than 600 years.
This Gothic Hall is an absolute must , a magnificent work of art with its murals from around 1900 and ornamentations.
The vault keys contain medallions and four lobes with scenes from the New Testament and of prophets, evangelists and saints.
The corbels that support the whole, are decorated with thematic representations of the seasons, months, and natural elements.
On the walls are scenes from the history of Bruges painted by artist Albrecht De Vriendt .
Like the monumental mantelpiece are these are neo-Gothic additions.
Each time visit the place, I fall silent, the stairs up are worn, I can’t help but think of my grand-parents, my parents, they got married here, they walked here, they sat in front of the mantelpiece surrounded by their family, in all their finery, you still get married here today!
I sit and dream awhile!
I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)
