097 BRUGGE PATRIMONY...

Tour of Europe 04 2016

Day 12 BRUGGE ARCHITECTURE…

The Almshouses in Bruges are part of the patrimony of the Public Centre for Social Welfare (CPAS) and provide habitation to, to less well-off elderly.

Most almshouses are small, white or yellow painted houses, sometimes in a row, but often grouped around a courtyard. They are located in the historic center of the Belgian city of Bruges and contribute in any significant way to the overall picture that offers this city.

Almshouses were from the 14th century founded by wealthy citizens or guilds. The oldest still in existence date from 1330, 1335 and 1355. They gave shelter to needy elderly or widows without means of subsistence .

They were founded by crafts (weavers, blacksmiths, bakers, shoemakers, boaters, etc.) or by private persons.

Until the end of the ancien regime they belonged to private foundations that were managed by the boards of the crafts or the descendants of the founders.

The residents who were housed in the almshouses of the crafts, of course, were members of the profession which in old age could not provide for themselves.

The almshouses were not intended for totally destitute, but for impoverished elderly, who knew adversity by the death of the breadwinner, illness, disability or old age. A modest rental fee was requested and some residents had to bring their furniture, and bed sheets. There was also a house rules. So one had to Bruges are praying daily for his benefactor, and behave properly. Begging was forbidden and bad behaviour was punished.

In most almshouses residents were given a small sum alimony and a daily bowl of soup. In the winter they got firewood.

Almshouses, built in sober and distinctive architecture are sometimes built side by side along a street or road shielded by a wall with a gate.

Majority of them are built around a courtyard. The garden was usually shared, but was sometimes divided into plots of land, where each occupant which could grow vegetables. Originally there were the houses (stone rooms') originating in a single room that served as kitchen, living room and bedroom.

In the 20th and 21st century houses were by two, sometimes joined by 3 and transformed into a larger and more comfortable home.

I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)
