Safe Hex

A hex is a rock-climbing safety device use to protect a lead climber from falls. It is hexagonal in shape, threaded with rope cord or wire cable that is attached to the climbing rope by a carabiner or quick draw. It is wedged into a crack and hexes come in different sizes to fit different cracks. A climber may well carry several hexes on her climbing rack to be able to choose one that will fit whatever cracks encountered on a climb.

This image shows Brian and his climbing partner checking out their climbing equipment in readiness for their trip to Yosemite.

For Macro Mondays theme 'Hexagon'. The vertical diameter of the hex was measured at 2.8 cm and the image has been cropped to just over 7 cm.
