White-tipped Sicklebill in Costa Rica
Nature photography by Juan Carlos Vindas
White-tipped Sicklebill (Eutoxeres aquila)
Of all the hard-to-find never and over all hard-to-photograph hummingbirds in Costa Rica, this is perhaps, the most difficult one as they are not numerous, they love to live inside the deep dark rainforest, and they are skittish as can be. Also it is bullied by other larger hummingbirds so when you put all that together and come away with a decent picture you feel the joy of victory!
Note how this hummingbird has a special beak that he uses to suck nectar from this Heliconia pogonantha, I imagine the millions of years it took for both to adapt to each other as this is the only hummingbird that has such adaptation and it is very welcome by this plant. I have observed other hummingbird species trying to reach the nectar from the plant but they are not succesful as their beaks lack the curvature. Also note the size of the eye on this hummer, that's another adaptation for the dim rainforests where the plant can be found. Besides that, this bird is the only one that attached itself to feed from the plant instead of hover in front of it.
