Raid on the Zerolta 4 Hypnosoda Lab, Part 2: Valkyrie Away!
Zerolta 4, the Zerolta system
“All members of squad Snowbird, report to Hanger 2, your transport is ready.”
Major Benjamin Garret slung his Beretta M9 SMG over his shoulder, checked his spare ammo and secondary weapons, and then exited his room.
The rest of Benjamin’s squad joined him on the way to the hanger, armed and ready for their coming mission.
Entering the massive hanger, they passed by a multitude of bays holding various types of starcraft, heading for a Northrup Grumman Valkyrie Heavy Dropship parked in the center of the floor, near the doors. Behind the dark-gray dropship sat two G26 Alligator IFVs, painted neutral gray, with navy-blue identification stripes.
The Alligator’s two-man crews stood outside their vehicles, awaiting the arrival of Benjamin and his squad.
Coming up to the IFVs, Benjamin saluted the waiting crews, then directed his squads members to their respective vehicles. Master Sergeant Bills was in charge of one, Benjamin the other.
The marines filed into the Alligators, taking their seats and strapping in.
Once the marines were seated, the Alligators were started, and driven up the ramp of the Valkyrie (which bore the name Arrow).
Benjamin faintly heard the ramp close, and then the powerful jet engines of the Arrow thundered to life, being able to be heard even through the walls of the Alligator.
“Hey, I bet I take down more hostiles then the rest of ya’,” Lieutenant Vexel shouted cockily over the engine noise.
“The objective is to capture them alive, Lieutenant Vexel,” Benjamin said, stressing the word ‘alive’.
Vexel looked mortified, until Benjamin continued lightly,
“But if it does come to that, I’d put my money on Sergeant Tine. She’s the best shot among us.”
Sergeant Maddlyn Tine was the unit’s sniper, and a deadly one too, having earned herself the nickname “Take-em-out Tine”
She grinned smugly, as Vexel relaxed, relieved Benjamin hadn’t taken it wrong.
Outside, as the Arrow powered up, alarms sounded, warning all personnel to retire from the main hanger, as the hanger was de-pressurized, and one of the huge, multi-story doors rumbled open.
Receiving the go signal, the Arrow lifted off and left the hanger, descending past the colossal outrigger-mounted 30-inch rail-gun, on a course for the LZ, an abandoned lot in Taliai City’s municipal district, five minutes from the target building.
Inside both Alligators, the marines talked and joked, a time-honored method for dealing with nerves, something there was bound to be plenty of on the fifteen-minute ride to the surface.
On the bridge of the Excelsior, the comms officer notified the ZCD the dropship was on its way, as the hanger door shut behind the Arrow.
The mission had begun.
