The Obelisk of Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan commemorates the three leaders of the 1784 CE uprising of Romanian peasants against Hungarian and German (Saxon) nobles. The goal was the abolishment of feudal serfdom. The three were captured in January 1785 CE and charged with treason by Hungarian authorities. Horea and Cloșca were executed in Alba Iulia while Crișan hanged himself the night before.

The revolt has become a point of national pride for Romanians. The obelisk was erected to mark the 150th anniversary of the executions (albeit completed two years late in 1937 CE). The base is a symbolic prison cell. Atop the cell stands a statue of the winged goddess Victoria bearing a laurel wreath for the three leaders.
