Behind the Oldest Wooden School House in the United States is the Grove of Educators of the Americas which contains busts recognizing several educators from Latin America and the Caribbean. This bust of Cuban José Martí (1853-1895), a national hero who campaigned for Cuba’s independence from Spain (achieved in 1898 with the Treaty of Paris which ended the Spanish-American War), was dedicated on Columbus Day, 1950—less than three years before the start of the Cuban Revolution in July 1953 led by Fidel Castro that finally ousted Cuban President Fulgencio Batista on 1 January 1959.
