The Westminster Tunnels

Three UP SD40Ns drag YSPBN out of the tunnels of Westminster Junction with its usual mix of stacks and manifest as they begin their assault on the grade leading out of the Mississippi valley. Westminster Junction is home to four tunnels built between 1885 and 1889 which brought the Northern Pacific mainline under the Great Northern and Omaha Road and into Saint Paul. A fifth tunnel built by the Soo Line in 1909 existed just slightly west of the NP which was filled in during the 1980s. Until the advent of double-stacks, all four tunnels through the junction were double-track.
