The Hanging Bridge

BNSF R-CHI457, the Western Avenue flip, wyes its train at Cermak before shoving into Western on the Lumber District Lead in the foreground. An ex-Great Northern GP30 in BN paint leads two H4 Geeps, one of which is an ex-ATSF GP40X, and a cut of stacks and mixed freight.

This impressive steel structure is an integral part of the connector bridge spanning the B&OCT/Panhandle and acts as a support for the east end of the bridge. The angle of the bridge as well as the amount of tracks below necessitate this structure as opposed to a conventional bridge pier. The result is essentially a bastardized suspension bridge. It is one of the most little-known engineering gems in Chicago.
