Scissor Me Timbers

A loaded BNSF coal train for Michigan crosses the Sanitary and Ship Canal over a remarkable collection of four Scherzer rolling lift bridges at Ash Street interlocking. Built in 1909-1910 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Works, these bridges carried the PRR (Panhandle), B&OCT, and CJ over the Sanitary, and they became known as the "Scissors" bridges for their collective lift mechanism. Although the bridges no longer lift, two of the bridges have remained in service with a third bridge being reactivated for the Draper Connection.
