Gateway to the Valley of the Sun

When Union Station opened in 1923, Phoenix was a town of just over 30,000 and had just surpassed Tucson as the largest city in Arizona. Today, it is America's fifth largest city with a population of over 1.6 million and has been without Amtrak service for 25 years. Union Station's last train, the Sunset Limited, was rerouted via Maricopa in June, 1996 as UP prepared to mothball its trackage west of Buckeye. Until last year (2020), the station was owned by Sprint, SP's former telecommunications subsidiary, but it has since been put on the market. During its heyday, over 16 trains a day passed through Union Station.
