Armitage Interlocking
Red Line #901 passes an outbound Brown Line local at Armitage, preparing to dive into the State Street Subway. Behind the restored canopies is Armitage Tower; built in the 1940s, the tower controlled the interlocking between the four-track Northwestern Elevated main line and the State Street Subway, which diverged down the middle of the main line. The tower closed in 1968 and found use first as a CTA office, then a signal department base.
