"Sushi for Ants"

I had been seeing holes in the ground for days but couldn't find a single cicada. Yesterday, I found the first molted exoskeleton on a tree. By the light of the moon on May 17th and into the early morning hours of May 18th, the nymphs began crawling from their holes in the earth and up the trunks of trees. I observed hundreds of them clinging to the bark or tree leaves, slowly transforming to their adult bodies. Some I observed had deformed or incomplete wings or a missing leg. Others were surrounded by hungry ants, as they molted and were voraciously devoured. This is only the beginning....
