Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) *Lifer

The Reddish Egret is the rarest egret in North America. Although it is currently not included on the Federal List of endangered species, it is listed as Threatened in Florida and Imperiled globally.

Historically, they were hunted to near extinction for their plumes (feathers). Currently, threats include coastal development, recreational sports disturbance near nesting and foraging areas, habitat degradation, loss of genetic diversity and increased pressure from predators.

Reddish Egrets attain a height of 27-32 inches and have a wingspan of 46-48 inches. There is a dark and white color morph (variation in appearance). Their diet consists mainly of small fish.
