Harbour Master Hotel.

Harbourmaster Hotel (formerly the Red Lion).

Today it is the Harbourmaster Hotel but when it was built between 1807-1811 by Rev Alban T J Gwynne it was the harbourmaster’s house.

The need for a harbour master was to enable him to monitor all shipping that entered the small coastal town of Aberaeron.

It raises the question as to how and why would a vicar feel the need to fund the building of the harbour master’s house?

Born in 1751 Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne was a country vicar and he had the good fortune to inherit a considerable amount of money in addition to two estates.

He decided to provide financial assistance to Aberaeron by providing the house and it seems that his generosity extended to other ventures that were to the benefit of the town.

At some later stage the harbour master vacated the house and it became a whaler’s inn and was possibly known as the Red Lion.

Today this boutique hotel is identified by its Bleu de France (Blue of France) colour scheme which is a colour traditionally used to represent France.
