Sacrifice.

Let silent contemplation be your offering.

Situated in the Hall of Silence in the ANZAC Memorial, Hyde Park, Sydney is the sculpture Sacrifice.

From boyhood Spartans were raised as warriors and when they went to war they were given a decree to return either with their shield or be upon it.

It would serve as a warning to be either victorious in battle or die in the attempt at victory.

Sacrifice is a creation of this story as it depicts a dead warrior being returned home on his shield after his death in battle.

It shows his body lying on his shield which is being supported by his grieving mother, his sister and a young wife with his child.

Raynor Hoff the sculpture has skilfully interwoven the Spartan warrior into the experiences and raw emotion that was felt by grieving mothers, sisters and brothers and the all too many young widows as a result of Great War 1914-18.

The war that was to end all wars.
