Its original name was Circular Head but would be later named Stanley after Lord Stanley who served as the British Secretary of State of War and the Colonies during the 1830’s and 1840’s.
Lord Stanley would go on to become the British Prime Minister and would serve three terms of office.
Situated in the north-western region of Tasmania the area in which Stanley is located formed part of a land grant that was issued to the Van Dieman’s Land Company in 1825 with the first settlers to the area arriving from England in 1826.
Stanley is the main fishing port of the north-west corner of Tasmania and it is also a popular tourist destination.
On the streets of Stanley the old world charm still remains with old buildings that transport us back to a more elegant time in history.
