Spiral stairs.
Spiral stairs.
Thousands and thousands of tired weary feet had trodden on these spiral stairs that lead to the upper levels of the Queen Victoria Building.
It opened for trade in 1898 has been a landmark on the Sydney scene since.
The QVB has its origins dating from 1810 Governor Macquarie dedicated the site to become a market place.
By 1820 a two storey building occupied the site and in 1829 the government issued a decree that the area in its entirety be used to establish a market square.
This was achieved in 1869 with a roof covering the market place.
In 1897 "In order to mark, in a fitting manner, the unprecedented and glorious reign of her majesty, the Queen" Council named the grand building the Queen Victoria Markets.
Today the QVB stands not only as a monument to Queen Victoria but also to the foresight of our early pioneers.
