For whom the bell tolls.

For whom the bell tolls.

It was a daily ritual and it's ring broke the silence of Belgenny Farm for over a century.

Originally positioned on an iron bark post which was located close to the roundhouse it would announce to the workers that their day had started and their days labour was ended.

It's ring tone would also herald the start and finish time for meal breaks.

On one unfortunate day in 1935 the appointed bell ringer of many years William Arthur Channell, 54, was struck on the head by the falling bell.

As a result of the accident William Channell was killed.

At the Coroner's inquiry Sergeant Porteous stated he examined the bell and bell post which had been repaired in July 1934. He found the 6m post was not in a good state of repair and, in his opinion, was not strong enough to hold the 74 kg bell. Coroner Mr. Baldock returned a finding of misadventure, saying `had precaution been taken (on the state of the post) this unfortunate man may not have lost his life`."

The bell tolls for thee William Arthur Channell, and also for those who once worked at Belgenny Farm, who have passed prior to, and since your passing.
