Natural selection at work.
Mother magpie comes to the nest, and a very sick-looking chick with a dull eye and a mouth that appears to contain necrotic material begs to be fed. Mother hesitates. A minute or so later, the healthy chick with the bright eye and healthy pink mouth asks to be fed, and is rewarded. Nature has its way of selecting the strongest.
It remains to be seen how many species extant today will have the strength to cope with rapidly changing climatic conditions.
