While out on the trails, we stopped for a few minutes to listen for a bird in the bush. All of a sudden from out of no where this bird came from behind us and literally threw itself all around on the ground not more than four feet from us. It then proceeded to make its way up the ditch and into the woods the whole time looking as if she were hurt. We had no idea what it was and quite honestly it kinda scared me. After a few shots we figured out what kind of bird it was and realized she was doing her "killdeer broken wing imitation" to lure us away from a nest. After a little searching we found two tiny chicks just off the trail. Unknowingly we had stopped within a few feet of her nest. She evidently had put up with our stopping and talking for as long as she could and decided she had to do something. It was quite a unforgetable birding experience. I have heard these guys in the woods at night but have never seen one before and will probably never run across one again. A lifer for me. The one shot is her on the ground faking injury. Look at the size of her mouth. These are very unique and interesting birds.
