Spring Oddity

My first clumsy attempts at ICM, taken in April '22 at the Mauerweg / TV Asahi Kirschblütenallee in Teltow near Berlin. In fact, the Brandenburg small town Teltow is part of the Berlin agglomeration, and the Berlin borough of Lichterfelde and Teltow blend "seamlessly", the yellow city limits sign (and the different-looking street signs) being the only evidence that one is leaving the city. The Mauerweg ("Wall Path") between Berlin and Teltow marks the route of the Berlin Wall on West Berlin's external border. Nowadays, it's a simple path between Berlin and the surrounding federal state of Brandenburg.

One part of the Mauerweg is also known as the TV Asahi Kirschblütenallee ("TV Asahi Cherry Blossom Alley"). Back in 1990, the Japanese TV channel TV Asahi initiated the "Sakura fundraising campaign" to celebrate the German Reunification. TV Asahi's viewers donated about 1 million Euros that were used to plant Japanese cherry trees. The cherry trees were supposed to "bring peace and tranquility to the people's hearts" (Tetsuo Terasaki, the initiator of Sakura Campaign), and they were planted in Berlin and Brandenburg at places that played a special role during the division of Germany. You may wonder why you can't see any cherry blossoms on these trees. Well, believe it or not, last year we've been three times to Teltow in order to photograph cherry blossoms, but only on our third visit the cherry blossom had finally started. And this photo was taken during our second visit, a time when the cherry blossom had already started in Berlin, but obviously, the few degrees less in the more rural part of Teltow and the Mauerweg were enough to delay the blossom. Quite an odyssey ;)

I don't recall if I've used the Oly's in-camera "Live ND Filter" for this photo or my variable ND filter that I'd brought along. All I recall is that I thought "Damn, this isn't easy at all!". I need to practice ICM more in order to achieve better results – skill comes with practice, after all, and I definitely haven't practiced this technique enough, yet.

Happy Sliders Sunday, Everyone!
