Waterworks Teufelssee / Wasserwerk Teufelssee

The waterworks nearby the Teufelssee ("Devil's Lake") in Berlin-Grunewald is one of the oldest (and the oldest completely preseverd) waterworks in Berlin. Construction works started in 1872, followed by further construction stages in 1890-'92 and 1895. The waterworks was in operation until 1968. It is located in the Grunewald forest, which is the largest green area in the City of Berlin.

Here you can see the oilcans of the lubrication system. Oilcans like these are attached to all the machines.

Since 1985 the "Naturschutzzentrum Ökowerk e.V.", a non-governmental information and education centre for nature conservation and environmental education, is housed on the site. The Ökowerk organizes and presents exhibitions, classes and events for all age groups.

The nearby Teufelssee, a natural, rain-fed pond of glacial origin, is a popular bathing lake. It is assumed that the name of the lake, "Devil's Lake", refers to a use as a pagan place of worship in pre-Christian times.
