Wooden Cars and Iron Men
Slowly disintegrating in the light of each passing day. A Steam-era relic that lived to feel the strength of locomotives where power was rated in Klbs instead of Amps. No type of freight car was ever as famous as the SP's high-sided wooden Sugar Beet racks. The sugar beet harvest is nonexistent now, I'm told it was pushed out of the market by a higher yield from sugarcane and more profitable crops needing to be grown on the same acreage. One of many surprises at Portola (since I did no research beforehand).
