Ghost train 'Elizabeth'!
With its drivers silhouetted against the light, and the heavily overgrown track, this old diesel train could easily be a ghost from the past!
In fact it is 'Elizabeth', a Vulcan Drewry diesel locomotive, built in 1949 and purchased by Alderney Railways in 1985 for tourism on the island.
The railway line, on which 'Elizabeth' runs, was built in 1847 for the transport of stone from a nearby quarry. This continued until World War II, when Alderney was invaded by German forces, and quarrying ended, never to resume.
