Edward Jenner

The statue of Dr Edward Jenner, in Kensington Gardens, was sculpted by William Calder Marshall, RA, and erected in 1862.

The inscription on the plinth reads:

"Edward Jenner MD FRS

1749 - 1823

Country Doctor Who Benefited Mankind"

In 1796 Jenner vaccinated young James Phipps with

cowpox and showed that the boy was then immune

to smallpox, thus saving countless people from disfigurement and early death
