Edward Jenner
The statue of Dr Edward Jenner, in Kensington Gardens, was sculpted by William Calder Marshall, RA, and erected in 1862.
The inscription on the plinth reads:
"Edward Jenner MD FRS
1749 - 1823
Country Doctor Who Benefited Mankind"
In 1796 Jenner vaccinated young James Phipps with
cowpox and showed that the boy was then immune
to smallpox, thus saving countless people from disfigurement and early death
