Curral das Freiras church

This is the altarpiece of the church of Curral das Freiras, Madeira.

Curral das Freiras came to prominence over 400 years ago during a 16th century pirate raid on the island. The island suffered a 100 day raid by the French pirate, Bertrand de Montluc in 1566. The nuns of the Santa Clara convent in Funchal fled to the most inaccessible part of the island, the 'Curral das Freiras', which translates as Nun's Refuge. The nun’s got their revenge on the pirate Bertrand de Montluc who was injured and died weeks later due to his wounds!
