The 50's couple

by Florence Corriveau

For my final project, I wanted to stay in the staged narrative style of photography. I’m photographing the couple of the 50’s by focusing on the power that the husband had on his wife and how women were constraints to stay and take care of the house and the children and to cook.

I have tried to make the portfolio look as authentic as possible by reproducing the style of the women and men in the 50’s and also by using settings that would fit and, therefore, avoiding modern designs such as stainless steel and electronics and choose furniture made of leather or wood.

I also wanted to create an emotional content by giving a personality to the characters. For example, the wife has, most of the time, a nostalgic look and isn’t joyful or happy. She tries to get closer to her husband who doesn’t pay any attention to her. The husband is only concerned by his word and by relaxing when he comes back from his job. In the pictures, he is the only one who is photographed outside in order to show that her wife is confined inside of the house and doesn’t have much freedom.
