I was tagged by Karin (Room With A View) and so I'm listing random things about me.
1. I love cats. (DUH!) But I also really love dogs and wish I had a bunch of them.
2. My favorite color is green.
3. I'm a shopaholic and I love fashion, perfume, and jewelry, even though I try not to (and can't) get too into them. But I read Vogue every month!
4. My favorite movies include Chinatown, The Elephant Man, and Mean Streets, all of which I went to see when they first came out for five nights in a row (!).
5. I gobble up murder mysteries like junk food. My most recent favorites are all dark and moody Scandinavian authors and in particular, Henning Mankell. I also love the "Scottish noir" authors such as Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, and Denise Mina.
6. I have written a book about horror movies and once had a full mock-up of my head made to be devoured by a werewolf in a sub-B-horror film. You can see it in my set of pictures of me here on Flickr.
7. I love to travel; so far my favorite places are Bergen, Norway, and Istanbul, Turkey.
8. I won a university teaching award funded by Enron! It even came with a plaque but I don't display it in my office anymore, it's too embarrassing.
9. My first cat was named Plushie and he was born when I was. We grew up together. He was an all-gray (blue) cat and to this day those are still my favorites.
10. My mom and dad are my best friends.
11. My favorite artists are all from the Northern European Renaissance and my most favorite one of all is Rogier van der Weyden. His paintings have sometimes brought me to tears. In more recent art, I love Francis Bacon.
12. I grew up singing alto in choir, playing viola, and piano, and classical music is very important to me. I go to the opera regularly.
13. One of my books has been translated into 14 languages, wth Latvian being the most recent!
14. I'm a Leo (I'm running out of things to say, can you tell?).
15. My favorite food is cheese, especially goat cheese, sheep's-milk cheese, and every kind of blue cheese. I could live on cheese.
16. When I visited Australia, my favorite thing there was the birds--blue fairy wrens, colorful parrots, and humorous cockatoos.
