Barn Owl Feathers

These feathers came from barn owls that are living in an owl house that we installed a little more than two years ago on our property. We did it to control the rodent population that's been thriving in our rural area, but we've come to really enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty of these wonderful birds. We've gathered these up off of the ground underneath the owl house that our nesting pair of owls raises their young owls in. They've raised two owls in 2011, 2012, and now again in 2013. The young owl still have not flown (or fledged) yet this year, but they're getting close. I look forward to getting some pictures as they learn to fly this year. The owls have done a great job, and I have not seen a gopher mound on our property in over a year. These birds, to my eyes, are remarkable handsome with beautiful colors (or as Monty Python used to say "lovely plumage").

I wanted to backlight the feathers, as I thought it would make them glow, and show their color and texture. I placed a YN560 in a Honl snoot behind and to the left of the feathers at about 11 o'clock. The flash in manual mode was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.

I've took a few pictures of the owls last year with my flash, and you can get an idea of what these beautiful birds look like by viewing that set. Here's the link. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/...

It goes without saying that this looks better when viewed large against a dark background, and you can see it in that enlightened manner by pressing "L" on your keyboards.
