There's One In Every Crowd

Our local photo club is having a monthly competition this Saturday for which the topic is vertical lines. I was casting about for ideas other than going down town and taking pictures of tall buildings when I happened to walk by this rattan screen outside against a patio wall with strong shadows behind it. I decided to bring it indoors and place it in front of a hanging white backdrop and try to create some strong shadows for additonal vertical lines.

I lit it one one bare Yongnuo YN560-II, back about six feet from the screen so that the shadows would be harsher than if it were placed closer. The way it works is that the smaller the light source and the greater the distance from the subject, the harsher the shadows. The flash was in Manual mode at about 1/4 power and was triggered by a Tiny Trigger from scottrobertstudio.com. In Photoshop, I tarted up the color of the screen and made the shadows absolutely black, and then using the liquify filter, I bent one piece of bamboo, and its shadow just so it would look more interesting.....(I hope).

Whether this works for the judge on Saturday is anyone's guess.
