Lovely Plumage - The Barn Owl Version
This is one of the two young Barn Owls currently living in the owl nest house that we had installed on our property last year. This young bird had only been flying for about two weeks when I took this picture. They're still fairly new to flying, and a little clumsy at this stage, and he's just using his wings to avoid falling off the perch. I know it looks like he's just made a perfect landing, but that's not the case. I had just discovered that using a flash wouldn't drive them away, and it's the first time I'd ever photographed them using artificial lighting. The "Lovely Plumage" is a Monty Python reference for those of you old enough to remember.
Strobist info: In this case I used an SB600 on a light stand pointed at the owl house, triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode. The flash was in TTL mode.
