In linea con il suo status di primo piano, il soggetto guarda leggermente in basso lo spettatore dall'alto. Il suo viso e le sue mani sono modellati con precisione e la figura è evidenziata sullo sfondo chiaro. L'espressione vivace e la freschezza della rappresentazione indicano l'influenza di Frans Hals.
Active from 1625 to 1646, he was a pupil of Frans Hals; he worked in Haarlem, Leiden and especially in Amsterdam; he painted practically only social gatherings, interior scenes and portraits.
The life-size portrait shows a confident, middle-aged man looking directly at the viewer. In his right hand he adorns a valuable spindle pocket watch. This type of portable watch did not appear until the beginning of the 17th century and can be read here as evidence of the wealth and nobility of the model, as only the very wealthy could purchase a pocket watch at that time. In keeping with its foreground status, the subject looks slightly down at the viewer from above. His face and hands are precisely modeled and the figure is highlighted against the light background. The lively expression and freshness of the depiction indicate the influence of Frans Hals.
