Richiesta dal nobile collezionista Asdrubale Mattei per il suo palazzo romano, la commissione dell’Ultima Cena segna un momento decisivo nell’affermazione del pittore francese nella scena artistica romana.
In ossequio alla tradizione iconografica consolidata, l’immagine si sviluppa in senso orizzontale, con gli Apostoli che si dispongono in perfetto equilibrio intorno alla mensa, spartita dalla bisettrice della composizione, che coincide con la figura di Cristo e con la piega, non a caso cruciforme, della tovaglia. L’apertura centrale e il drammatico chiaroscuro di matrice caravaggesca servono a stabilire un più intimo contatto tra Cristo e l’osservatore.
Requested by the noble collector Asdrubale Mattei for his Roman palace, the commission of the Last Supper marks a decisive moment in the affirmation of the French painter on the Roman artistic scene.
In accordance with the established iconographic tradition, the image develops horizontally, with the Apostles arranged in perfect balance around the table, divided by the bisector of the composition, which coincides with the figure of Christ and with the fold, not by chance cruciform, of the tablecloth. The central opening and the dramatic chiaroscuro of Caravaggio's matrix serve to establish a more intimate contact between Christ and the observer.
