Nel mezzo di un fastoso banchetto organizzato da Baldassarre – re babilonese vissuto nel VI secolo, figlio di Nabucodonosor -, durante il quale mille dignitari bevono dai grandi vasi d’oro rubati dal padre al tempio di Gerusalemme, compare una mano misteriosa che scrive in alto su una parete della sala parole incomprensibili «Mane, Thecel, Phares», (tradotte da Preti in «Conto, Peso, Divisione»): soltanto il profeta Daniele si mostra capace d’ìnterpretarle come presagi della prossima fine di Baldassarre e della divisione del regno babilonese fra Medi e Persiani (Daniele 5,1-30)

In the middle of a sumptuous banquet organized by Balthazar - Babylonian king who lived in the 6th century, son of Nebuchadnezzar -, during which a thousand dignitaries drink from the great golden vases stolen by his father from the temple of Jerusalem, a mysterious hand appears and writes on the wall of the room incomprehensible words "Mane, Thecel, Phares", (translated by Preti as "Conto, Peso, Divisione"): only the prophet Daniel shows himself capable of interpreting them as omens of the imminent end of Balthazar and of the division of the Babylonian kingdom between the Medes and the Persians (Daniel 5,1-30).
