Considerato tra i massimi esponenti del neoclassicismo, visse in Italia e soprattutto a Roma dove si dedicò allo studio dell'antico ricevendo onori, commissioni e incarichi. Dotato di eccezionale abilità tecnica, elaborò uno stile di severa monumentalità, toccata a volte da una intima serenità.
Figlio di un intagliatore di legno islandese, dal 1781 si formò all'accademia di Copenaghen ma fu soprattutto influenzato da J. A. Carstens. Visse a lungo in Italia (1796-1838), salvo qualche soggiorno in patria, in Germania e in Polonia (1818-19). A Roma, dal 1797, si dedicò allo studio dell'antico e delle opere di A. Canova, approfondendo anche le teorie di J. J. Winckelmann e A. C. Quatremère de Quincy; dal 1811 insegnò scultura all'Accademia di San Luca, esercitando una profonda influenza sui giovani scultori italiani e stranieri.

Equipped with exceptional technical ability, he developed a style of severe monumentality, touched at times by an intimate serenity.
Son of an Icelandic woodcarver, from 1781 he trained at the academy of Copenhagen but was mainly influenced by J. A. Carstens. He lived for a long time in Italy (1796-1838), except for some stays in his homeland, in Germany and in Poland (1818-19). In Rome, since 1797, he devoted himself to the study of antiquity and the works of A. Canova, also deepening the theories of J. J. Winckelmann and A. C. Quatremère de Quincy; since 1811 he taught sculpture at the Academy of San Luca, exerting a profound influence on young Italian and foreign sculptors.
