11th Chapel: Jesus is nailed to the cross - Sacred Mount of Domodossola - UNESCO World Heritage Site (2003)
La prima pietra di questa cappella fu posta il 19 Aprile 1768 come attesta anche una pietra inserita nel basamento. Ha un disegno mistilineo con un portico antistante semiesagonale sostenuto da pilastri e colonne di pietra locale. Il disegno e la costruzione sono dell’architetto Pier Maria Perini.
Il gruppo plastico in 23 statue e due cavalli per rappresentare il Mistero della Crocifissione di Gesù fu eseguito a Domodossola, e posto in opera nel 1776 dal plasticatore valsesiano Giovanni Luca Raineri di Rossa. Decisamente di tutti i gruppi plastici questo è quello che meno si eleva sotto il profilo artistico. I fondali della cappella furono dipinti fra il 1779 ed il 1780 dai fratelli Giuseppe Giovanni e Antonio Tonicella di Cusano.
The foundation stone of this chapel was laid on 19 April 1768, as a stone placed in the foundations attests. It has a mixed style with a semi-hexagonal portico in front supported by pilasters and columns of local stone. The design and construction are by the architect Pier Maria Perini.
The tableau of 23 statues and two horses portraying the scene of the Crucifixion of Jesus was executed at Domodossola and was begun in 1776 by the Valsesian modeller Giovanni Luca Raineri of Rossa. Certainly this is the least artistic of all the tableaux. The backgrounds of the chapel were painted between 1779 and 1780 by the brothers Giuseppe Giovanni and Antonio Tonicella of Cusano.
