Southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora

An Atlanta garden

If you are fortunate enough to live in the Southeastern United States, you are probably familiar with the heady scent of the gorgeous summer blooming magnolias. Growing 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread of 40 feet, these gorgeous evergreen trees grace many a southern lawn. Seldom do the flowers appear low enough to be seen up close, so I was delighted to find this beauty on my morning run today. Racing home to get my camera, I tried to capture a bit of the glorious beauty of this dinner plate sized bloom and only wish I could send you the wonderful, sweet smell that accompanies it.
