Down to nowhere
AW D22/1933
Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. (Engineers) Ltd. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne were pioneers of diesel traction in the UK. Works number D22 has spent all it's life in the North East, initially being sent as on demonstration loan to the Britannia Works of Dorman Long & Co. Ltd at Middlesbrough. It was sold to A Reyrolle & Co. Ltd. of Hebburn in 1937. In December 1970, it was sold to W. F. & J. R. Shepherd & Co. scarp metal dealers, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It was acquired by the Tanfield Railway in 1978. The original engine was replaced by a Gardner 6LW in 1963. This venerable little machine still sees regular use and is seen here pootling around the yard at Marley Hill in June 2021.
