Daniel Blackman Curtis was born 30 March 1826 in Fairfield County, Connecticut, the son of John and Lucy Curtis. Daniel worked in his father’s tannery until John Curtis passed away in 1845, and then continued the business until 1849, when he sold the business. Daniel joined the California gold rush and mined for a few years. In 1852, he was living in Placer, California and listed his occupation as hotel keeper. He then became a general produce merchant, shipping goods by mule into the mining areas. Daniel left California in late 1856 and settled in Steuben County, New York. He purchased half-interest in a tannery, but after two years, sold that and purchased a farm (about 400 acres) and sawmill from his uncle, Daniel Curtis. In May 1863, Daniel married Mary Aseneth Brown (born circa 1838), and the couple had at least five children--Jane, John S., George H., Uri, and Mary Curtis. In 1870, the family was living in Campbell, Steuben, New York, and Daniel listed his occupation as farmer/lumberman; the family had real estate valued at $30,000 and a personal estate of $20,000. By the time of 1940 census, John Curtis had retired and was living with his daughter in Corning, New York. John S. Curtis passed away in 1946.

George H. Curtis was born in October 1866 in Campbell, New York. George went west as an adult, and in 1900, was living in Kern, California, where he was superintendent of a water company. By no later than 1917, he was living in Pasadena and was working for B.O. Kendall Company, Inc., which was involved in insurance, investment, loans, and rental properties. George was married to Anna (last name unknown, born circa 1863). The couple was living in Pasadena at least through 1934, at which time George was vice president of B.O. Kendall.
