Photographer John Coerver was born 28 February 1842 in Waterloo, Illinois, the son of Adam Coerver. John was orphaned at an early age. He learned the barber’s trade and then worked on a passenger boat operating between St. Louis and Cairo, Illinois. He came to Staunton, Illinois around the time of the Civil War and opened a barber shop and photography gallery, which he continued to run until his death on 6 August 1899. According to a local history, he was man of recognized ability and integrity, and was a devout member of the the Catholic Church. He had a son that worked as a photographer for a time in Staunton.
